Define contrary to service manual ;) IH started out spec'ing 'viscous chassis lube' (grease), and later switched to 90W gear oil(140W for sustained high temperatures). I'd use a mix of good sticky grease(like Shell Darina) and 50W motor oil.2. What's the preferred lube for closed steering knuckles (as in my '67 1100 T'All with Dana 44 front)? Are there any contrary-to-service-manual, new technologies for this application as well?
