Re: The way things used to be....

Skip-

Continuous duty redline on a 345 is 3700 rpms. You can rev it to about 4500
if you don't keep it up there for very long.

Breaking it in should simply be done at varying speeds. Many people have a
different way to do it when it comes to oil use. What I do is run it with
10-30 for about 20 minutes when I first fire it up, then replace the oil and
filter with whatever I intend to use to run it and change at 500. Then I
follow the 3000 mile schedule. The factory recommends 30 weight oil, but
that was before the good multi-grade detergent oils were used. I've been
sticking with 10-30 with really good results, or 20-50 in the summer when I
lived in Phoenix.

Once I hit the first 3000 mile oil change, I would switch to synthetic and a
top quality oil filter. I've heard Baldwin makes a good one that has twice
the capacity of a standard oil filter. I "think" that Dave Nuenke had the
part number. That makes oil filter changes more expensive, but barring flaws
in the parts that were used, the engine should last longer than you.
