Spring over rear w/ 727, racer progress
Just a note regarding a spring-over rear suspension and a 727.
I just put the rear driveshaft in the racer. Rear Dana 44 from a '63
Travelall (though that shouldn't matter), spring-over using springs from
a '72 SII non-HD. I did NOT redrill the center pin or move the axle at
all on this truck (and as such, 33s look awfully close to the front of
the wheel well.. cutting will come in a few weeks)
I put the rear driveshaft from my '77 SII (manual) that I just removed
this week for the lengthened unit. It went in. There are no splines
showing on the slip joint, but I'm sure there's almost *NO* extension
travel left.
It had been theorized before that you could use a 727, spring-over, and a
stick shift rear driveshaft (approximately 1" longer) and be "OK".
It looks like that's a "maybe".. I'll know more the first time I get a
little travel out of the rear suspension.. and if I spit the 'shaft out
when I jump, I'll know it doesn't work. <VBG> (note: this won't happen
until after the driveline loops are installed.. you think I'm *that*
crazy? Endo-s are not my idea of fun)
I started the rollcage, but didn't finish. It's a tight fit on the rear
quarters (did you know the body is narrower at the top than the bottom?)
and I need to whack it a bunch with my sledge hammer.. but it was after
10, and I'm *trying* to be considerate of my neighbors.. ;-) So I got it
part way in (started wedging it in) and then called it quits.
Got the steering box attached, too.
