Dieseling was a common problem back in the '70s.  Sometimes more spark
advance would help.  If you have manual transmission, the easeiest is just
to switch off and let out the clutch in gear.  Literally kill it.

The problem is that something in the cylinder is hot enough to act as a
glowplug and with a carburetor there is no way to shut off the fuel.
Sometimes a bit richer mixture would help.  In the '70's and 80's it
became completely apparant that a carb could not operate in the lean
mixtures demanded by the pollution laws.  With EFI it is simple to kill
the fuel.  Then of course it don't matter, it dies.
