The only reasonably available materials that will truly stand up to
the EGT
if you insulate an exhaust system are high nickel cast iron and 321 or
347
Stainless Steel. Even 304 or 316 stainless will NOT take it long
term--they
will crack from intergranular high temp induced stress corrosion. The
best
way to keep something near to the exhaust cooler is with a separate
metal
heat shield which has decent air flow on both sides of it--something
like
the heat shield which was used by the factory on the later Scouts. If
you
make the shield out of stainless, so much the better, since shiny on
both
sides is a BIG help in reducing radiative heat transfer.
