Okay paint my butt confused.
The style that I have is a 2-piece ( I Guess ).
the race is pressed into the axle tube and
when you remove the shaft it comes out with the
silly plate that retains the seal, the 'caged'
part of the bearing with ~30 exposed rollers,
and just after that there is a ring around the
shaft- looks like a retaining ring that holds
the spinny part of the bearing in place.

History on this is I pulled the shafts to
install a locker. On reinstall I cleaned the
spinny parts off and _oiled_ them (ya I'm a fool)
and to top it off I way overtorqued the axle
retaining bolts (hey they are 1/2" ers....)
so after loosening those up (after ~5-700 miles)
and driving a bit, there's a nasty grinding
noise coming from either side of the rear on
weight transfer such as a corner or bump.

Could (should?) I try to retorque the retaining
plates or pack the bearings in grease? Or just
admit defeat and get new bearings? The ones in
there are with a tapered race... And this is for
a 79 S II if there was a specific changeover date.

Thanks a lot,
-Damon (so very close to done with this project...)
