Hood Catch-'74 WM

Help!  Any of you guys with '70's era PU's and T'alls know the secret to
getting the hood open once the catch starts to stretch out to much and thus,
not release?  I have not dealt with these much, but of the ones that I have
played with, three have had this problem.  Last time I couldn't get it, I
pulled down on the release with pliers and finally bought enough room to get
it open.  This time it does not seem to be working.  I can see where the
hang-up is, but cannot get anything in there far enough to "pry" it loose!
Any ideas?

And if two of these posts come though, I apologize, but my e-mail keeps
