Another little trick along these lines--after you have done most of these
things, and have it running--put enough two-cycle oil into the gas tank to
make about a 30:1 mix when you fill the tank, and run one tank of this
through it. It'll smoke some more, but the top end will stay freer longer.

Castrol used to (may still ?) sell some stuff called Castrollo (upper
cylinder oil) which one added to the fuel (at maybe a 200:1 ratio). I
imagine this is pretty similar to what John is talking about pouring down
the carb. As long as you are not going in for a smog test, a steady diet of
a very lean mix (maybe 400:1) of good quality two stroke oil is really
quite good for an engine's life!
