The other bar you're thinking about is called a Watt Link.  A panhard rod
is sort of half of a watt link.  The purpose of the Watt link is to allow
the center of the axle to move vertical but restrain it in the horizontal.
It does a better job than a Panhard rod, but is more complex to build.
You could leave it attached when off-road.
