Tom,

When you design the Panhard rod the frame side pivot point should be on a
strong bracket behind the axle at the same level as the axle.  The lateral
movement induced then is insignificant.

You will need to pop it loose for full off-road articulation.  When I
start pulling a trailer with my Scout I will probably end up installing
one.
