Dan,

I had a dead Prestolite.  The engine would run fine except when it would
quit dead.  All the backfiring turned out to be due to very short cutouts
of the ignition.  When I put in the new ignition, it all quit.  

If you've done plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, I guess you're down to the
prestolite.  There isn't much else.
