OK Kurt, Roy I and others who care,
I pulled my engine and tranny out today (again) to investigate and switch things around. As I said, both throw out "retainers or collars" were the same (both truck models??). That is, the distance from the bearing surface to the surface where the fork acts on is about 2" for both. Actually the one I measured was 1.960". It seems like it would need to be about 2.5".
Kurt, Howard, anyone, could you get the length of that dimension that I should have (or the one I do have and confirm it as wrong)? Then I'll know for sure, and I may need to buy the correct one. And if you have a part number for the correct one, that would be a huge help too.
BTW, I reversed the throw out fork, it gave me more throw, but it looks like I will have clearance problems from the clamp bolt in the fork to the surface of the pressure plate. I think I had it in right, but I am just using the wrong throw out retainer in both cases. The Scout's PO was a pretty aware guy, he used to be a service manager at an IH garage. But, maybe he thought there would be no difference in the throw out collars....
TIA
