  It seems like the best design would be almost U shaped like

Of course, it might take a pretty beefy metal brake to bend the thick 
stuff into those angles.  You could also weld on the shock mount higher 
than stock so that that won't get caught on anything either.  I'd be happy 
to test any of someone wants to fab a few like these :)
