Re: Thermostats How does it work
How does the Robertshaw work that's different from the Stant style?
Here goes.
The Stant is a simple valve that opens and closes the line to the upper
radiator hose.
The Robertshaw performs as though it were two valves. As the valve to
the radiator opens, the valve to the bypass **closes**!!
This is the difference. When the Stant opens the bypass remains fully
open. With the bypass fully open, not all the water goes through the
radiator. At low engine speeds very little will go through the radiator
as this is the high resistance path. It's easier for the water to go
through the bypass.
The Robertshaw forces more water to go through the radiator as the
engine heats up.
