fuel pumps

I was messing around with Good this morning and found that the pump was
bad. I went to get a new pump from Pep Boys, because my NAPA is closed
on sunday, and they only had the one style with the short arm. After a
couple of futile minutes playing around with that I bought an electric
pump. 
   Now here is my question, should I run the fuel through the old pump,
or by-pass it?
