Allen,

The problems with these starters are so common that you can buy kits at 
most good autoparts stores to do the Ford solenoid addition.  Summit 
Racing and Jegs carry the starter conversion kits.  When you see things 
like this it usually means there is a design fault somewhere.

Having said that, my latest starter, (rebuilt by Delco, not el-cheapo 
rebuilders) sure sounds and acts better than the two previous rebilt 
units.  New ones are available at around $300.  The Delco rebuild was 
about $70, seems to me.
