You might want to try the weber 2 brl down draft carb for your 196 (it is a
bolt on with the supplied adapter).  A guy in our club uses it, and it is
very impressive offroad (I watched  him drive up a gulley on his side, the
scout would have rolled onto it's side if not for the gulley's wall, the
carb didn't even stumble).
