Improved Cooling
I just found a copy of SLF72-34 dated July, 1972 that spells out the
changes made for the improved cooling V-392's, which began with engine
serial number 1015243. The stated purpose was "Internal engine
temperatures have been reduced in the V-392 by improving the water flow
pattern in the crankcase and cylinder heads."
Changes were:
Crankcase--water openings in the front wall for entry of water from the
water pump rather than into the cylinder heads with new water pipes used.
Water slots were incorporated into the crankcase at the rear of the top
deck.
Cylinder heads--slots added at the rear to align with the slots in the
crankcase.
Cylinder head gaskets--slots added (at both ends so it can be used on
both sides of the engine).
Intake Manifold Gaskets--the water opening port located between the 3rd
and 4th cylinders on each side was blocked off with only a small, about
3/8" hole left.
I don't think there's anything here that hasn't been discussed before,
but this should clarify what the changes were.
