Dan,

Get a new cable. Take a torch and burn the plastic "T" (or round thing)
knob from the end of the new cable (once it's all threaded through and
you're ready). Now take a drill n' put a hole through the end of the new
cable (where the knob was).. you can now put your factory knob on the new
cable. BTDT

When I put the 304V8 into my '77, we apparently bashed the starter
against the inner fender a few times while lowering that 700+lbs behemoth
inside.. and it turned over *very* slowly.. requiring Ether every time I
wanted to start it. I took the starter off my 196 and swapped in it..
problem solved.

At first, it was just slow.. then it started making a grinding sound a
few days later... it was changed out within a week.
