196 rebuilds

I have a 196 in my 800 with only about 60,000 miles on it. I don't think it
has ever been rebuilt.  The MPG's are equetable to a V8.  The compression
sits around 65 lbs and doubles with a squirt oil.  There is no oil burning
but it does spit some oil out the exhaust.  The guy at NAPA suggested that I
only do a ring job.  He said IHC engines are so strong that is all that
really needs to be done aside from the fact that a complete rebuild kit will
cost over $700 in parts alone.  What has been your experiences?
