When you say "gas clatter", do you mean what we typically call ping. Or, 
could it be the dreaded "chirp"?

Both occur whey you step on the gas.  the easy test for "ping" is to put 
in 1 or 2 tankfulls of super premium gas.  If it goes away, it's ping.

Let us know.  That can be handled.
