Your right about compression checks. There are too many variables.

Did you check the engine hot?

Your supposed to.

Did you hold the throttle wide open?

Your supposed to.

Did you remove all the plugs?

Your supposed to.

Was the battery strong?

If not, it might have cranked differently from one cylinder test to the
other.

Did you use a screw in or a plug in type compression guage?

There can be leakage.

Hence, the moral of the story is cylinder to cylinder variation is more
important than overall compression - by a large margin.
