Re: ihc-digest V6 #4

Ralph,

I have the 2bbl holley and 345 in my scout and Tquad 392 in the
travelall. The 392 has way more nads and is quicker out of the hole, and
actually gets better mileage pulling the travelall than my scout does. Scout is
about 10 mpg usually, the t'all about 12mpg. My best option for a scout would
be a stock 392 with a TQuad. Without serious modification it seems almost
pointless to try to 'boost' an IH motor.

I wouldn't recommend towing #6K with a scout, it's just too much weight.
The scout is not really up to the task. My scout weighed in at 5480, the T'all
at 6360. That 1000 really makes a difference, it's alot more stable and the 9"
width increase and 20 inch wheelbase increase is like a free gift. The
travelall is like a locomotive, feels like nothing will stop it and since I put
the 3/4 springs in the back it's really a monster!

304 is not really a good towing motor, the 345 is better, since 345 or larger
has 4bbl. If you can get a 304 4bbl manifold (they have to be specially made)
then it may work, but it'll be tough with a 304 scoutII!

Hope that helps,

Subject: Motors and gas mileage

I would appreciate the comments of anyone who has experience with the
following:

1. gas mileage and performance of the IH 345 compared to the 304.
2. gas mileage and performance of a IH 392 with the 345 heads.
3. gas mileage and performance of the stock 392.

I need a combination that can handle a combined gross load (trailer wgt plus
contents of truck) of at least 6,000# decently with 4.09 gears and 32" BFGs.
Transmission is the T-19 with D-300 Xfer.

I know this group is not a bashful one. Fire away and thanks.

Ralph
