3 spd Trannies

I have recently aquired a 71 Scout 800B with a bad 3spd transmission.  It
has a AMC inline 6 in it and whatever the stock transfercase was for this
model.  My question is, will a 3spd from a 78 SII work.  The 78 has a 304
and dana 20 transfer case in it, however it had an unfortunate accident and
was burned to the ground while the roll cage was being welded in.  If this
transmission is a possibility it would save me a lot of money.  Please help.
