RE: General maintainance assistance, please
Welcome to the club Nick
Regarding your brakes. Make sure the vacuum line is attached to both
the manifold and the vacuum booster, and make sure that the hose is in
good shape. Next make sure the master cylinder is full on both sides.
When you turn the key to the start position does the "brake" light on
the speedometer come on? Does it go out after you move the key back to
the run position? Do this test with the emergency brake off. You can
lift the front and put it in neutral and spin the wheels and press the
brakes, then do the same to the rear to see if both the front and rear
brakes are working (use wheel chocks and jack stands). The door handle
mounts with a phillips head screw, just pull the handle like you are
opening the door and look between the handle and the door panel and you
will see the screw to tighten up. The window crank mounts with a allen
head screw through the handle. The door slaming could be sagging body
mounts, misalignment or trashed rocker panels, you'll have to decide
that. Charcoal smell? You got me there, I don't have any idea. If the
heater works well at idle but fades at speed, your heater core may need
to be cleaned out, it may have to much accumulated gunk in there and be
partially blocked. The squeak could be your belts or bearings; your
alternator is right under your a/c compressor, so it may be that. I
hope this was vague enough <bg>. If you have any more questions feel
free to ask.
