Oh, FWIW, my '72 Scout II's stock AM radio, with the stock dash mounted
speaker, is the best sounding AM radio I've heard in a LONG time (at least,
as long as my 21yr old brain can remember).. 

It it tube based?  I haven't torn one apart yet to see.. but.. for whatever
reason, it just *sounds* great. :)

Of course, my Sony AM/FM/Cass/10-disc changer setup with some modern
speakers attached sounds a lot BETTER, but.. :-)
