Tom,

Thanks for the advice on the brakes!  I spent an hour wailing on the drums
with an axe (all I had handy) before they came off!  The axles were a
pushover by comparison.  I used a slide hammer puller (borrowed from work)
to pull the axles, and the differential came right out. (in two pieces!)
Now I'll get the new (or used) carrier and reinstall my still good looking
ring and pinion and be back on the go!  You don't happen to have an old ring
gear carrier lying around, do you?
