E46 Seat Heater switches 2000 vs. 2001

Not sure if this was ever covered, but has anyone noticed that model year
2000 E46's had seat heaters that allowed for 2 settings while model year
2001 and on had seat heaters that allowed for 3 settings.  Does anyone know
if this is a simple change in the switch itself (and therefore a quick
upgrade) or something more complex in the seat wiring, etc.?
