Actually,
The BMW maximum acceptable level of oil consumption for M engines had 
recently been dropped to 1 liter per 1000 km(~600 miles). 10 some odd 
years ago it was 1 liter per 1K miles. 
Max's oil consumption is OK under the new guidelines, though a bit on the 
high side of things.
