Re: bmw-digest V9 #2290

Jim,
This is how I did it. Jack up the car & remove the wheel, and take off the
center cap. Put the wheel back on, and lower the wheel back on the ground.
Using the 36mm (not sure of the size) socket and a long breaker bar, break the
nut free (after undoing the retainer bent area), remove the nut almost all the
wall, but not off. Jack the car back up, loosen the lug bolts almost but not
all the way off. Then grab the tire jerking it toward you, popping it out
against the lugs. This will break the bearing free from the spindle. Once you
break it free, remove the nut & pull it all the way off. When installing, I
found that I had to take some 600 grit paper and sand the spindle on the end
to get the new bearing on. Evidently, the end next to the thread might get
'swelled' a bite from the high torque squeeze of the nut. Assemble, put the
wheel back on, lower it to the ground and use your torque wrench to get the
required torque. The weight of the car will keep the wheel from spinning. I
used a Craftsman's torque wrench that went that high.

Hope this helps,
Richard Vaughn
