Thanks for all the replies so far.  Lots of good info.

As far as depending on a built in gauge, I don't intend to.  Whatever
air pump I do get (either powered or just an old bicycle pump), I
have several gauges already (a couple of pencil types, a bicycle tire
gauge with pressure release, and a nifty new electronic gauge).
