The brake sensor is only a wire (electrical wire). On my 91 318, it is only
a wire looping in a plastic tab, attached to the pad. When the pad wears,
the platic tab and the wire wear also until the wire breaks, then you have
an open circuit.
To test the sensor, use a ohmmeter or a test light to see if you have
continuity.

If the sensor is bad, you can simulate a good sensor by jumping the two
terminals at the plug. If the light is still on, visually check the cable
for damage.  Check all the sensors, front and back.
