Paul,
Take your VIN to the dealer and get original delivery spec sheet print out.

E36 M3s come with either 3.0 or 3.2 liter engines.
I have no idea what was the sticker you and your friend were examining. If
you take a picture of the sticker and post it somewhere we could all take a
look.

What exactly do you call a 'brake panel'?
If this is a red light below the instrument cluster, than you are likely
referring to the brake pad sensor light. Your brake pads are either worn or
your brake pad sensors at front driver-side and rear passenger-side wheels
are either damaged or unplugged.

I don't know where you live, but in the US ATE Blue and Type100 fluids are
very popular.

That's a good place to start. Visually inspect the brake pads and trace the
brake pad sensors to their plugs. Replace parts as necessary or pay someone
else to do it for you.
