Yes, I love the old metal bumpers too. My e12 528i had the 10 mph
accordian bumper, which I thought looked good and purposeful. (And I
always thought gray-market Euro bumpers looked cheap, feeble and archaeic)  
I once came to a stop at a light just as it turned red, while the Jeep
Cherokee behind me was busy changing into my lane. The collision destroyed
a fortune in plastic Jeep parts, while only pushing my bumper in an inch
on the energy-absorbing mount.

Alex f: "plastic masquerading as bumper" and "the real bumper is 
underneath" are equivalent statements.
