Hey 'Hoosier',
I had a similar problem on my 89 325i.  Black leather back seat that got some 
kinda white discoloration on it when I had it out of the car.  I'm assuming 
we are talking about real leather here (I'm not completely familiar with 
leatherette, but I'm pretty sure BMW hasn't used fake leather for interior 
stuff any time recently).  Anyway, I used a little black shoe polish on the 
seat.  Followed by buffing it of with a buff brush, followed by more polish, 
more buffing. . .you get the idea.  Once it looked fairly decent, I buffed 
real good with a white towel that I didn't care about to make sure nobody's 
clothes were ruined by sitting on it.  Once the towel wasn't picking up much 
of anything, I used a little bit of leather conditioner on it, and everything 
was as good as new.  As for deep gouges or scars in the leather, I can't help 
you, except to make everything the same color.
