I did this job myself over the summer, thanks to some diagnosis from this
list. I have an 87 325 (E30). Here what U replaced
New Driveshaft assembly - all bearings, bushings, etc. (about $400 from
zygmunt motor www.bimmerparts.com)
New Guibo (old was frag'd, probably due to bad u-joints)
New bolts to attach the joint between the front and rear parts of the
exhaust system.
New muffler hangers (just the part with the stud that breaks off)
New muffer hanger rubber donuts (old were cracked)
New transmission exhaust hanger (stud breaks off one part but gotta buy it all)
New selector shaft bushing (connects tranny to linkage, lots of shift play)
Silicone sealant for the shaft bushing (that felt bit rots away)
New ball/socket for the shift lever (also to fix shift play)
Tranny mounts (I just got the standard ones)
Patience
1 six-pack.
Contray to Bently's advice, but on the advice of those who do this for a
living, I just reused all the main bolts on the guibo and driveshaft. The
rear ones are small and one got a little rounded when I did it, might as
well just get new.
Contrary to Bently, who says you need to pull the whole exhaust system, on
my car you can change the driveshaft by just removing the rear half of the
exhaust system. No need to mess with those header bolts.... After I had
it all unbolted it took me 15 minutes to figure out the puzzle, but better
the dealing with broken exhaust header studs.
I had some fun finding the right guibo -two places sold me the wrong one,
one local dealer almost did same but I told them to look again. I was
told that there is an error in one of the parts cross-reference CD's, the
parts guy who figured it out found an old parts book with the right info.
Obviously, the guibo should be the same size as the flange on the
driveshaft you buy.
PITA, but results were excellent.
Enjoy.
Tony.
