Broken Odometer

I have a '82 528e on which I just finished replacing the clutch and 
rebuilding the drive shaft.  I did not notice if this was the case before I 
did this work or not, but my odometer no longer works.  Did I miss something 
on the rebuild, or is the odometer driven from somewhere else?  Since the 
speedo is run electrically, I assume the odometer is operated independently 
of that.  This malfuntioning odometer could be a coincidence, but I would 
like to know how the odometer operates.  My Bentley manual says nothing about 
it.
