RE: E36 Brake Circuit



This is probably one of two things. The most common is the brake light
switch. Faily easy to replace, and inexpensive too, about $10 at the dealer.
The other one is less common, but it is what was wrong with mine. The brake
lamp bulb was not making very good contact with the socket. Eventually, the
arcing created a hole in the contact, and I would get intermittant brake
circuit failure readings on the OBC. To fix it, I removed the housing (just
a few, easy to access nuts), cleaned up the contact in the housing, and
bought a new lamp holder.

Check the contacts on your brake lamp holders, and if they look good, go
ahead and replace the switch. My money is on the switch :-)
