My guess is a leaky injector.
Diagnosis:
1) The injectors are shut off when the throttle is closes and therefore,
popping and sputtering could not occur if the injectors are shut off.
2) If you smell gas when you first start the engine it could be due to the
leaky injector dumping fuel into the cylinder when you shut the engine off.
Also the injector will start leaking as soon as the ignition is turned on
making that cylinder start rich.
More:
Check the injector fuel rail pressure and observe the pressure drop when the
engine is stopped. A healthy system will maintain the rail pressure for
hours even days.
A leaky injector can also cause a rough idle.
You should diagnose if it is a part-throttle let off or throttle closed
issue.
You may be able to diagnose which injector, by looking at the plugs and find
the plug that is black from a rich mixture.
You may want to also check for gas in the oil.

Hi all,
Help me troubleshoot this one: My 88 E28 M5 is, for lack of better terms
"popping", "sputtering" mostly when downshifting. I can smell gas when I
first start the engine and a bit of smoke appears too (not oil burning).
One
person offered that I change the plugs and wires and another says that I
have
an imbalance in the air/fuel mixture. Please help me out. I am
mechanically
challenged, but will attempt the fix myself...John
