odd sound when engine starts up

Hi-
I have a 100% stock 97 M3 coupe. I hear what sounds like a pump or small
motor running for about 2 or 3 minutes when I start the engine after the
car has been sitting over night. The sound stops and then the car runs
fine. What is making this sound? Is it an engine oil pump of some
kind? I'm just curious... not concerned about it. I have no reason to
think that something is wrong with the car.
