Factory CD changer

I have recently purchased a 1997 318ti. It has the H/K system and the BMW cd
changer made by Alpine. I will be upgrading the head unit to a Alpine and I
was wondering if an Alpine head unit with changer controls would operate the
factory changer? If so which Alpine models will work? Also if it is possible
is it a direct plug in or are there adapters that I will need? Any help would
be appreciated.
