bmw cellular telephone

I have a 1998 BMW 528i, I was wondering if there is an alternative to the 
BMW cell phones that can be used with the bmw system.  I think it is a waste 
to have controls on the steering wheel, the dash and all prewired and to 
install another phone and bypass everything, but then, I am not willing to 
pay $1,200 for a phone by BMW.  Are there any adapters which will let me use 
another phone, has anybody looked into this??  Any help woould be greatly 
appreciated.
