E34 front window trim separating ... BMW solution too costly

The plastic flat trim on the front surface of my friend's E34 front
window is separating from the windshield gasket.  Several of the plastic
clips fitted to the windshield that hold the trim in place have broken
clips that attach to the undeside of the black plastic window trim. The
clips cost $2.46; 4 are broken.  BMW Service solution to the problem is
to replace the windshield at a tune of over $500 ... they claim that the
windshild must be removed to replace the clips, and that the glass
normally cracks on removal.  Common sense must prevail.  Anyone had a
similar problem with the clips, and found a more cost effective solution.
 Need help.
