Aftermarket Stereo upgrade

As I said in a previous note, I am considering the purchase of a 2000
323Ci or 328Ci. As a car stereo enthusiast I have been shopping for
cars based on the ease of which I think an after-market stereo could
be installed.
The saleswoman I talked to at our BMW dealer seemed to think that
removing the factory stereo would decrease the value of the car. I
would hope any professionally designed and installed system would add
to the value if anything.
I also understand BMW has somewhat picky rules on aftermarket add-ons
as far as their warranty goes. A salesman I talked to later checked
with the service guys since they would be the one making the
determination, and I guess they said that as long as any problem I
bring it in for can't be blamed on the addition, then it should be
fine. So again, with a professional install, I can't see it being a
problem.
I'd like to hear from people who have put aftermarket stereos and
alarms into their cars, specifically the 3 Series if possible.
How did it go? Did you replace everything? Or just some parts? Run
into any major problems? Any tips?
Thanks
Michael
