abs wire

hi
quick question that i have for a freind that owns a e36 but is email
impaired

if you cut the wires to the abs sensors in the car (It is a thick black
wire, with one insulated wire in it, and another unshielded wire , plus
some type of metal insulation around all that, then the rubber
insulation), what is the proper way to repair it? can it be repaired? and
what purpose does the metal shielding serve?
