You're certainly right about that! The shock from the 1-2 shift would be
enough to spin the wheels alot in snow (It does in the rian sometimes - I've
never driven in snow :-)

Some Auto's will start off in second if you put the lever in 2. Most BMW's
have the * (snow) ooption which starts off in 2 or 3 I believe.

My sister Holden used only gear 2 if it was in 2. I discovered this after
selecting 2 up a windy hill. When I tried to overtake a slow truck, the auto
would not shift down to first until I selected D.

I suppose it would depend a lot on the car and it's trans.
