as my father just acquired a '99 540iT with the premium system, i know that
the "premium" system leaves A LOT to be desired. it is not much better than
the standard sound. the only bmw cars where the "premium" sound system could
be a possible choice would be in the 3series with th HK system, which was in
his previous lease - a '97 M3. however that's not really an option for you.
i don't know about any of the retrofit costs but i would seriously recommend
that you take the car to an independent car audio specialist in your area as
they would know a lot more than a bmw dealer.

i would definately not recommend any factory bmw sound as an adequate
auditory experience. i would also be willin' to bet that an inconspicuous
after market upgrade would benefit your wallet too - perhaps just some drop
in replacements and an amplifier or two would be needed. the factory systems
having multiple tweeters in the front per channel (L, R channels) is just a
marketing gimmick, and you would really only one per audio channel....ok i
think i've made my point....
