<E36> 318i Won't start!

Hello folks

It started well today morning for a couple of minutes, but I did not drive
the car. Then in the evening, it just won't start. 
The starter motor seems to run strong, the battery is ok. But there is some
different kind of noise which sounds like the engine is not rotating at all!
The belts are fine and rotate with the motor. 
Could it be ignition? But i have got new plugs in there!
Could it be fuel system? I haven't changed the fuel filter so far.

I would really appreciate if anybody can give an early response. I am
planning to tow the car to the dealer service, if I can't figure out what
wrong by myself.
