Re: disconnecting the odometer

I guess you live in the US, but I think you'll find there are BIG fines, and
possible jail time involved, plus BMW will be after you for fraud too - both
for the speedo tampoering itself, as well as breaking a legally binding
document ... not to mention the law.

The other thing you might find is that the computer will "notice" the lack
of speedo input. The OBC will need it (no worries) but the only easy way to
stop the speedo working is to unplug the sensor, and then the entire car is
without speed input. Possibly BMW's diagnostics will point this out to them
and when they do it will be reported to the police as well as probably
impounding the car.

just because the display on the dash doesn't count, doesn't mean the
electronic storage version won't count.

I can't see it working too well (but I don't know the details of the car)

Sounds like he's a poser who can't really afford the car (otherwise he would
just pay the extra money like he should) and he deserves to get caught if he
does it.

On the insurance front, they could very possibly not pay out, because the
car is not up to road safety regulations (that happens here in NZ) plus it
is fraud - and not often considered any less of an offence as stealing the
money directly.

many thousands of dollars and the jailtime isn't really worth it is it?

I'd point out the legal as well as the moral issues of doing it.

For all I know your friend may be a very nice person, but if I knew what he
had done he'd no longer be a friend. Wouldn't you feel ripped if you brought
this car after he had it?
