E34 creaking steering!

When the steering is turned on her E34!
It creaks from the off side.  I can not yet localise it but it could be a ball
joint or even the box.
 It does not happen over the entire movement range, nothing seems too amiss but
it is getting her to bend my ear!

Any preliminary ideas before I get under it in the daylight?
